Is Anubis Related To Osiris?

Is Anubis related to Osiris? The ancient Egyptian deity Anubis has various familial connections within Egyptian mythology. While some sources suggest that he is the offspring of the cow goddess Hezat, the prevailing belief holds that he is more commonly regarded as the son of the prominent gods Osiris and Isis. However, it’s important to note that different traditions present differing narratives. In some versions, Anubis is portrayed as the result of an adulterous relationship between Osiris and the goddess Nephthys, adding a layer of complexity to his divine lineage. These varying accounts highlight the multifaceted nature of Egyptian mythology, making it a fascinating subject for exploration.

Is Anubis And Osiris The Same God?

Is Anubis the same god as Osiris? To understand this, let’s delve into the history of these two ancient Egyptian deities. In the Old Kingdom period, Anubis held the most significant role as the god associated with the afterlife. However, during the Middle Kingdom era (around 2000–1700 BC), Osiris began to ascend in importance, gradually taking over the role previously held by Anubis.

This transition in their roles can be traced back to the Middle Kingdom when Osiris started to be revered as the primary god of the dead. By the time the Roman era began in 30 BC, tomb paintings from that period began to depict Anubis in a new role. In these depictions, Anubis is shown guiding the souls of the deceased toward Osiris, highlighting Osiris’s central position in the Egyptian concept of the afterlife during this later era. This evolution in their roles over time helps us better understand the complex interplay of Egyptian mythology and religious beliefs.
